If you're looking to study, work, or move abroad, your English certificate isn't just another piece of paper-it’s your ticket. But with so many options, which one actually matters? The answer isn’t about which test is hardest or easiest. It’s about which one the people you’re trying to impress recognize and trust.

What employers and universities really look for

Not all English certificates are created equal. A university in Canada won’t accept the same test as a hospital in Australia. An employer in Germany might only recognize one version. The key is matching your certificate to your goal.

For immigration to Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, IELTS Academic is the default. The Canadian government even uses it to assign points under its Express Entry system. PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is the new kid on the block-but it’s growing fast. It’s fully computer-based, with AI grading everything. No human examiners. That means less bias and faster results.

Results come in as little as 48 hours. That’s a game-changer if you’re on a tight deadline. The test is 3 hours long, with integrated tasks. For example, you might listen to a lecture and then summarize it in writing. It feels more like real-life language use.

Scoring is from 10 to 90. Most universities want 65+. Immigration authorities in Australia and New Zealand accept PTE. Many UK universities now accept it too, including those in the Russell Group.

The cost in India is ₹15,500-slightly cheaper than IELTS and TOEFL. If you’re good with technology and typing quickly, PTE can be easier to prepare for. But if you struggle with computer-based tests, it might feel overwhelming.

Cambridge English: For long-term credibility

Cambridge English exams-C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency-are the oldest and most academically respected. They’ve been around since the 1910s. If you’re applying to elite universities in the UK or Europe, these carry weight.

What to avoid

Don’t buy fake certificates. There are websites selling “certified” English diplomas for ₹2,000. They’re useless. Embassies, universities, and employers verify scores directly with the test providers. If you’re caught with a fake, you could be banned from entering the country or expelled from school.

Don’t take a test just because your friend passed it. Their goal might be different from yours. What worked for them might not work for you.
